Places to Visit in Mumbai (Bombay) - Part 1

Mumbai was previously known as Bombay. Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra state. It is the biggest and busiest city of India. The city is full of excitement, vigor and lots of fun and entertainment. The city offers many spellbinding places to visit. Let us discuss some places in Mumbai which you must visit whenever you visit the city. These comprise Gateway of India, Prince of Wales Museum, Chowpatty Beach, Elephanta Caves, Haji Ali Mosque, Hanging Gardens, Juhu Beach, Chor Bazaar, nautical Drive, Flora Fountain, etc. Let us see each of these one by one in this report series.

Gateway of India: The Gateway of India is the most beloved monument and stamp of Mumbai. It is settled at Apollo Bunder at the southern end of Mumbai. It is the starting point for visitors who enter Mumbai via the sea route. Gateway of India was built to honour the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai over 100 years back. It is designed in both Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. The gateway is 85 ft high. The Gateway of India has indispensable historical importance. Visiting mumbai is incomplete if you miss this fantastic place to visit. Right opposite the gateway is the iconic Taj hotel.

Elephanta Caves: Elephanta Caves is a major tourist attraction. It is settled on the Elephanta (or Gharpuri) island in the Arabian sea. The architecture of these caves is believed to be dated from 600 Ad and before. The caves are carved from the solid basalt rock and were originally painted in the past. The caves are divided into two groups. The first group is the large group and is known as the Hindu caves. The second is the smaller one known as the Buddhist caves. The Hindu caves has the stone sculptures which are dedicated to lord Shiva. The caves were a place of worship for Hindus in past. It is listed as a Unesco world inheritance site since 1987. One has to go to Elephanta via a ferry assistance from Gateway of India.
